What Is the Longest-Lasting Wood Fence?

A fence can enhance the privacy and security of your home and help define property boundaries. One type of fencing material is wood, such as cedar, redwood, and pine. They have many advantages, including natural aesthetics, customizability, durability, and eco-friendliness. Here are the longest-lasting wood fences:

    Cedar

Cedar is a long-lasting tree that has a reddish brown hue and a straight fine grain. The tree has natural oils that help prevent the growth of moss and mildew. Cedar also has the chemical compounds thujas and thujaplicins acids that naturally stop the growth of fungi on the fence. Since cedar absorbs moisture at a low rate, less moisture accumulates on its surface, creating unfavorable conditions for mold. Cedar is known for its tight grain structure, which is also not conducive to mold spores. Since mold is unable to easily penetrate the wood fence, cedar is a good option for long-lasting fencing.

    Redwood

Many insect species stay away from the natural chemicals lignins and tannins present in redwood. Even when the outer layer of the wood is damaged, the inner core of the wood has a higher concentration of these chemicals. Redwood also has a dense grain structure that is difficult for insects to chew and destroy. This species of tree also has low moisture concentration, which creates a dry environment not habitable for most insects. The result is that redwood fencing can survive in areas with insect infestations.

    Teak

Teak contains resins on its surface that block water and moisture from penetrating the fence. Without enough moisture, bacteria and fungi can’t survive within the wood. Teak trees are also dense and have tight grain structure that reduces the amount of moisture that can accumulate within them. Teak’s chemical composition includes oleoresins that help keep away damaging organisms. The tree type can also maintain its appearance and function in extreme weather conditions like humidity and rain. These features make teak an ideal option for long-lasting fencing.

    Black Locust

The high density of black locust wood reduces the wood’s rate of moisture absorption. This can prevent water from accumulating within the wood and causing swelling. Another thing that keeps moisture away is the tree’s straight grain pattern and the fine texture of the interlocking grain. Black locust wood also has a special chemical composition that includes phenolics and flavonoids that reduce their rate of natural decay. Other chemicals within black locust wood, like gallic acid and robinin, can prevent rot and decay. A fence made from black locust wood can stand strong long-term because of its resistance to moisture absorption and decay.

    Pressure-Treated Pine

Pressure-treated pine has chemicals like alkaline copper quaternary and copper azole that prevent shrinking and whipping due to moisture accumulation. The wood also undergoes a treatment process that reduces tension and stress among the fibers. Less tension reduces the chances of the fence twisting and warping as the surrounding humidity and temperature change. Manufacturers also create uniformity throughout the wood to protect its structure during installation.

    Choose a Durable Wood Fence

The ideal wood fence resists mold and mildew growth on its surface and keeps insects away. It should also not warp or shrink when temperature and humidity fluctuate. Find a professional installer of fences to get high-quality and low-maintenance fences that are long-lasting.
